“Help… what do I wear??”
If that thought has crossed your mind while planning a session, you are absolutely not alone.
Whether you’re planning family photos, senior pictures, engagement photos, or branding images, what you wear plays a huge role in how your photos turn out (and how much you love them later).
The good news? You don’t need to overthink it or start from scratch.
I’m going to walk you through exactly how to choose outfits that feel like you, photograph beautifully, and work for your specific type of session — without the stress spiral.

1. Be Comfy!
If you’re uncomfortable, it’s going to show. Every single time.
Whether it’s family photos, senior pictures, or a branding session, you’ll be moving, sitting, standing, walking, maybe wrangling kids, maybe laughing a lot — and if your outfit is stiff, too tight, or constantly needing adjustment, it becomes the focus instead of the experience.
When people ask what to wear for a photo session, this is always my first answer:
wear something you can actually live in for an hour.
If you feel good, you’ll look good. It’s that simple.

2. Pick Colors You Love!
You don’t need to follow strict color rules — but being a little intentional goes a long way.
The best outfits for photos usually include:
soft neutrals (cream, beige, warm white)
earthy tones (olive, rust, tan)
muted blues and greens
These colors photograph beautifully in natural light and don’t distract from faces and connection.
That said, if there’s a color you love and feel amazing in? Wear it.
The goal isn’t to match a Pinterest board perfectly. It’s to choose colors that feel like you and work well together if more than one person is involved.
Coordinate, Don’t Match
If you’re planning outfits for more than one person, skip the exact matching.
Instead, aim for coordination:
choose a color palette (2–4 colors max)
mix tones and textures
vary outfits slightly
This keeps things visually interesting and much more natural-looking than identical outfits.

3. Be stylish, but timeless!
Trends come and go… your photos stick around.
So while it’s totally fine to lean into your style, try to avoid anything that might feel dated a year or two from now.
Things that tend to age quickly:
super trendy cuts
loud graphics or logos
overly bold patterns
Instead, aim for outfits that feel like a slightly elevated version of your everyday style.
When people look back at your photos, you want them to see you — not the trend cycle.
Texture > Patterns
Instead of bold prints, lean into texture:
knits
linen
denim
flowy fabrics
Texture adds depth without distracting from faces, which is exactly what you want in a strong photo.

4. Be Versatile!
If your session allows for it, having options can make a big difference.
For senior sessions, branding sessions, or even some family sessions, bringing a second outfit (or layers you can add/remove) gives you variety without needing a full reset.
Think:
a casual look + a slightly dressier one
adding a jacket, cardigan, or accessory
swapping shoes for a different vibe
This is especially helpful if you want a mix of looks without over complicating your session.

5. Check the Weather!
This one sounds obvious… but it gets overlooked all the time.
Missouri weather (especially around Columbia) likes to keep things interesting, so it’s worth planning ahead.
A few things to think about:
Will you be too cold to relax? You might want to plan on some warm layers, scarves and fun gloves or hats to keep you toasty while you pose for your photos.
Too hot to feel comfortable? You can solve for it with a session early in the morning or later in the day and wear light, breathable clothing to keep yourself cool.
Is there a chance it'll be rainy during your session? Plan ahead with some rain boots and some cute umbrellas and do a rainy photo session. It can be fun, unique and show off the type of weather your region gets.
Is it likely to be particularly windy? Pull your hair back and wear clothing that will move in flattering ways when it gets windy.
Is the ground going to be wet or muddy? Consider boots instead of lighter shoes.
Choosing outfits that work with the weather (instead of fighting it) helps you stay comfortable and keeps your session feeling easy and natural.

6. Don't Forget the Shoes and Socks!
Shoes are one of those things people don’t think about until the last minute — and then they end up being the one thing that doesn’t quite fit.
Good rule of thumb:
keep them neutral
keep them simple
make sure they match the overall vibe
Bare feet can work great in some settings, but otherwise, try to avoid:
athletic sneakers (unless intentional)
bright or distracting colors
And yes… socks matter more than you think.

7. Remember the Occasion!
What you wear should match the feel of your session.
A branding session is going to look different than a family session. Senior photos might include more variety. Engagement sessions often lean a little more polished.
If you’ve been Googling “what to wear for pictures,” this is where context really matters.
Think about:
where your photos will be used
how you want them to feel
what version of yourself you want to show
There’s no one-size-fits-all — just what fits your session best.
Dress for the Location
Your environment plays a role in what works best.
For example:
natural outdoor settings pair well with soft, earthy tones
urban locations can handle a bit more contrast
open fields or gardens look best with lighter, softer palettes
You don’t need to overthink this — just avoid outfits that compete with the environment.

8. Think about the Details!
Details can elevate your photos in a really subtle but powerful way.
Things like:
simple jewelry
layers and textures
well-fitted clothing
neat nails (yes, really)
These little touches don’t need to be overdone, but they can pull everything together and make your photos feel more polished. Just don't go overboard with something that wouldn't feel like you.

9. Staying Power!
Your outfit should last the whole session — not just the first five minutes.
Ask yourself:
Will this wrinkle easily?
Will I be adjusting this constantly?
Does it stay in place when I sit, stand, move?
Will my toddler's shoes come off mid-session?
Photos involve more movement than people expect, so choosing something that holds up throughout the session makes a big difference.
Consider straps on women's and girls clothing, comfortable buttons on men's clothing and colors that won't immediately get dirty as you progress through your day. Accidents happen, and that's not a big deal, but plan ahead and try to avoid difficult outfits. You don't want more headache for yourself!

10. Pick an Outfit You LOVE on Yourself!
This is the one that matters most.
You can follow every “rule” out there, but if you don’t love how you feel in your outfit, it’s going to show.
The best thing you can wear for photos?
Something that makes you feel confident, comfortable, and like yourself.
That’s what actually translates in images — every time.
Final Tips!
If you're getting your hair cut or colored make sure to do it at least a week before your session so it has time to settle and you won't be surprised by what it looks like.
If you want to buy a brand new outfit for your photo session make sure it fits properly after washing and try on the entire outfit together a few days before your session.
Layers and accessories can add texture to your photos and give your outfit and extra pop!
Consider the movement of your clothing if you enjoy photos with a lot of motion or if you want your outfit to really stay put.
