You’ve booked your session — now the fun part is getting ready for it. Whether you’re planning family photos, senior portraits, or a couples session in Columbia, MO, a little preparation goes a long way toward helping everything feel relaxed and natural.

This guide walks you through exactly how to get ready so you can show up confident, comfortable, and actually enjoy the experience.

Plan Your Outfit

What you wear plays a big role in how your final images feel.

Choose outfits that feel like you — comfortable, flattering, and easy to move in. Neutral tones, soft colors, and simple patterns tend to photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your connection, not your clothing.

If you’re booking:

Try to have outfits ready a few days before your session so you’re not scrambling the night before.

Bring Comfortable Shoes (Seriously)

If your session includes walking between locations (parks, trails, downtown spots), bring a second pair of shoes you can move comfortably in.

Even if you’re wearing dress shoes or boots for photos, having something practical to walk in makes the entire experience easier and more relaxed.

Plan Any Props You Want to Include in Your Photo Session

Props are completely optional, but they can be a really meaningful way to personalize your photos and make your session feel more “you.” For some people, props help tell a story — whether that’s highlighting a hobby, celebrating a milestone, or just adding a relaxed, natural activity into the session so things feel less posed.

This can be especially helpful for family photography sessions in Columbia, MO, where kids often do best when they have something to interact with, or for senior portraits, where props like instruments, sports gear, or graduation items can help reflect who you are right now in a really authentic way. For couples sessions, simple props like a blanket for sitting together, a shared drink, or even just something to do while walking can help create more candid, connected moments.

You don’t need to overthink this at all — most of the time, the best props are simple and personal rather than elaborate or styled. If you’re not sure what might work for your session, I’ve put together a full list of ideas and inspiration here:

And if you have something meaningful in mind that isn’t listed there, that’s even better — I’m always happy to help you figure out how to work it naturally into your session so it enhances the experience without feeling forced.

Bring a Bag (With Your Session Essentials)

And speaking of props and shoes! Bringing a small bag to your photo session is one of those simple things that can make the whole experience feel easier and more relaxed. It keeps everything you might need in one place so you’re not juggling items between locations or trying to remember where you set things down between shots.

I always recommend a bag that’s easy to carry or leave nearby while we’re shooting — something you can quickly grab from without it feeling bulky or in the way.

Inside your bag, think of it as your “just in case” kit for the session. Most of what you’ll want to bring is less about photography and more about comfort and peace of mind. Things like your phone, keys, and any personal items you don’t want to leave behind are obvious essentials, but it’s also helpful to include a few small touch-up items that can make a big difference throughout the session.

Self Care Items

You never know what may come up during a session but having some basic self-care items on you can make things much easier. Here's my list of some basics to consider:

  • hair brush/comb

  • hair gel or spray

  • mirror

  • lint roller

  • chap-stick or gloss

  • oil-absorbing sheets (can help you look fresh even if you get a little hot)

  • baby wipes (especially for a session with kiddos)

  • bug spray

  • change of clothes for kids (in case one gets dirty)

  • tide pen (if you're likely to spill something)

  • Hair ties or bobby pins (if you decide to pull your hair back)

  • A change of glasses if you have transition lenses

  • treats and squeaky toys for pets

Not all of these are possible and not all of them apply to everyone, but these are just some things to consider.

For families, this bag can also double as a “kid survival kit,” especially for younger children. A few small distractions, comfort items, or backup essentials can go a long way in helping everyone stay happy and relaxed throughout the session. It’s not about over packing — just having a few things on hand so you feel prepared for whatever the session brings.

If you’re including props in your session, this is also a great place to keep anything small and easy to carry so it’s all together when we need it. When you’re not worrying about where things are or whether you forgot something important, you’re able to stay more present in the experience, which always shows up in your photos.

Bring Water & Light Snacks

For longer sessions or sessions with kids, having water and a few light snacks on hand can make a bigger difference than people expect. It helps keep energy up, moods steady, and everyone a little more comfortable throughout the session.

The key is to keep things simple and low-mess so you’re not worrying about spills or stains during photos. Some easy options are crackers, dry cereal, or fruit snacks that won’t stain clothing.

It doesn’t need to be much — just enough to reset if someone gets hungry or needs a quick break. A small amount of preparation here often helps the entire session feel more relaxed and enjoyable.

Be Well Rested Before Your Session

This is one of the most important (and most overlooked) parts of preparing for your photos.

Well-rested kids and adults are simply more comfortable, more flexible, and more themselves in front of the camera. That naturally leads to more relaxed, genuine images.

If possible, try to avoid scheduling your session after a packed or exhausting day. A slower morning or an early evening session tends to work best for energy and mood, especially for family photography sessions in Columbia, MO.

For senior portraits and couples sessions, being rested also helps you feel more confident and present, which makes a noticeable difference in how your photos turn out.

The Little Things

There are a few small things that can subtly improve how your images look, but none of them need to be perfect or overthought.

  • If your hands are going to be in the photos (engagement session, maternity, couples, etc.) make sure your nails are done and your ring has been cleaned.

  • If your skin gets dry, put on some lotion a little while before getting dressed for your session.

  • If you are wearing open-toed shoes and want matching nails, make sure your toe polish is ready to go.

  • If you're wearing a tie, make sure that it reaches your belt when it's tied.

  • Make sure your socks match your outfit

  • Bring a fun/cute umbrella just in case. We're in Missouri after all. (If it's raining at the time of your session you're welcome to reschedule, but I know that's not always possible.)

That said, none of this is about perfection. It’s just a few easy things to keep in mind if you happen to think of them.

Plan Something Fun After Your Session

One of my favorite tips: don’t rush off immediately after your session.

Instead, plan something small to look forward to afterward — dinner, ice cream, a walk around downtown Columbia, or just extra time exploring the park where we’re shooting.

It helps the session feel like part of a bigger, more enjoyable experience rather than something you’re trying to “get through.” This is especially helpful for family photo sessions, where kids (and parents) benefit from a relaxed ending instead of a quick transition to the next thing.

It also tends to leave people feeling better about the whole experience, which honestly matters just as much as the photos themselves.
