Family photos are one of those things that sound simple… until you’re actually trying to plan them.
Outfits, timing, keeping kids happy, hoping everyone cooperates—it can feel like a lot. And if you’ve ever had a stressful experience in the past, you might be going into this one a little unsure of how it’ll go.
The good news? It doesn’t have to be stressful.
If you’re planning family photos in Columbia, MO, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know, from what to wear to how to prepare your kids, so your session feels relaxed, easy, and actually enjoyable.
If you’d like to get a feel for what your session could look like, you can explore my family sessions or browse recent family galleries to see how these come together.

When should you schedule family photos?
There’s no one “perfect” time for family photos. It really depends on the look you love and what works best for your schedule.
In the Columbia, MO area, here’s what each season tends to look like:
Spring: Fresh greens, blooming trees, and a lighter, softer feel. Great if you want something bright and airy.
Summer: Full, vibrant greenery and lots of flexibility with timing (especially for evening sessions). It can be warm, but we can absolutely work around that.
Fall: This is the most popular time of year—and for good reason. Warm tones, changing leaves, and that cozy fall feel. Because it’s so popular, these sessions tend to book earlier.
Winter: Often overlooked, but a great option if you prefer something simple and low-stress. Studio sessions or minimal outdoor sessions can be a really nice change of pace.
If you’re trying to decide what works best, I’m always happy to help you think through timing based on your vision and your family.

What time of day is best?
Lighting plays a big role in how your photos turn out, but real life (especially with kids) matters too.
The “ideal” time is usually just before sunset—that soft, warm light is hard to beat. But that doesn’t always line up perfectly with nap schedules, dinner, or bedtime.
And that’s okay.
We can absolutely find a time that balances great light and happy kids. A well-timed session with content, comfortable kids will always beat perfect lighting with stressed, overtired ones.
If you want to dive deeper into timing, I have a full post on choosing the best time of day for photos.

What should we wear for family photos?
This is one of the biggest stress points, and it really doesn’t have to be.
The goal isn’t to be perfectly styled. It’s to feel comfortable, confident, and like yourselves.
A few general tips:
Coordinate, don’t match
Stick with colors you love
Avoid anything too stiff or uncomfortable (especially for kids)
For families, I always recommend thinking about movement—kids sitting, being held, walking, playing. Clothes that allow for that will photograph so much better.
If you want a more detailed breakdown (with examples), you can check out my full guide on what to wear.

How to prepare kids for family photos
This is the part most parents are really worried about—and I promise, you’re not alone.
The biggest thing?
👉 Try to keep it low pressure.
Kids can feel when something is a big deal, and when they feel pressure to “be good” or “smile perfectly,” that’s usually when things get tricky.
Instead:
Talk about it like something fun (but not overly hyped)
Let them know we’ll be hanging out and taking some photos
Avoid putting too many expectations on them
A few practical tips:
Make sure everyone is fed (this one matters more than anything 😅)
Bring snacks and water
Plan around nap times when possible
And during the session? They don’t need to sit still. They don’t need to smile on command.
Some of the best photos come from kids just being themselves—running, laughing, snuggling in, or even being a little shy at first.
That’s all part of it.

What should we bring to our session?
You don’t need a ton—but a few things can make your session feel much easier:
Snacks (always a win)
Water
A backup outfit for younger kids
Wipes or tissues
A comfort item if your child has one
Any props you think could be fun for your session (check out my prop guide for ideas)
If we’re walking between locations or moving around a bit, having a small bag with these essentials can make a big difference.

What should we expect during the session?
If you’ve never done a family session before, it can feel a little unknown—but it’s much more relaxed than most people expect.
We’ll move through a mix of:
Lightly guided posing
Natural interaction
A little bit of structure, but plenty of flexibility
You won’t be left wondering what to do—I’ll guide you the whole way.
And we’ll take breaks when needed, adjust as we go, and keep things moving in a way that feels natural for your family.

What if things don’t go perfectly?
This is probably the biggest concern parents have.
What if the kids don’t cooperate? What if someone is in a mood? What if it just feels chaotic?
Here’s the honest answer: That’s completely normal.
And it’s okay.
Some of the most meaningful, genuine photos come from those in-between moments—the laughter after things get a little silly, the snuggles when someone needs a break, the way your family naturally interacts.
My job isn’t to expect perfection. It’s to work with your family exactly as you are and create something beautiful from that.

Planning for holidays and special moments
Family photos aren’t just something you do once—they often tie into important moments throughout the year.

🎄 Christmas card photos
Fall is the most popular time for holiday photos, and sessions tend to fill up quickly.
A few things to keep in mind:
Book early if you want fall colors
Think about how your outfits will look on a card
Leave time for editing, ordering, and mailing
Planning ahead here makes everything feel so much easier.

🌸 Mother’s Day photos
These are such a meaningful option—and often overlooked.
Photos that include moms (instead of always being behind the camera) can be incredibly special, both now and years down the road.
These sessions tend to focus more on connection than perfection, which makes them feel really natural and relaxed.

🎉 Other moments to capture
Anniversaries
New babies
Elementary & Middle School graduations
Milestones or just updating your photos
You don’t need a big reason to document your family—sometimes it’s just about capturing this season of life as it is.

How to get the best photos (without stressing)
If you take nothing else from this post, take this:
The best photos don’t come from perfect outfits or perfectly behaved kids. They come from connection.
Talk to your kids. Laugh with them. Hold them close. Let them be a little silly.
Trust the process, and trust that we’ll capture the moments that matter.
